Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, affecting approximately one in ten people at some point in their lives. It produces a sharp, stabbing pain in the bottom of the foot — typically worst with the first steps in the morning — that can persist for months or even years without appropriate treatment. Clinical massage therapy addresses the muscular and fascial causes of plantar fasciitis and can significantly accelerate recovery.
The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. It supports the arch of the foot and absorbs shock during walking and running. Plantar fasciitis occurs when this tissue becomes inflamed and irritated, typically at its attachment point on the heel bone.
While plantar fasciitis is often treated as an isolated foot problem, it is frequently connected to muscular tightness further up the kinetic chain. The calf muscles — particularly the gastrocnemius and soleus — are directly connected to the plantar fascia via the Achilles tendon. When these muscles are chronically tight, they increase the tension on the plantar fascia with every step.
Tightness in the hamstrings and gluteal muscles can also contribute by altering gait mechanics and increasing the load on the foot.
Clinical massage treats plantar fasciitis through a whole-chain approach:
Between massage sessions, regular calf stretching, rolling the foot on a frozen water bottle, and wearing supportive footwear can all support recovery. Caroline can advise on specific exercises and self-care strategies tailored to your situation.
