How to Choose a Qualified Massage Therapist in Surrey

By Caroline · Massage for Wellness, Smallfield, Horley, Surrey

The massage therapy profession in the UK is largely unregulated, which means that anyone can technically call themselves a massage therapist — regardless of their training, qualifications, or experience. This makes choosing a therapist a decision that requires some knowledge of what to look for. This guide explains the key credentials, questions, and red flags that will help you find a genuinely qualified practitioner.

Qualifications to Look For

ITEC, VTCT, or CIBTAC

These are the most widely recognised massage therapy qualifications in the UK. They are awarded by accredited examining bodies and require completion of a structured training programme that covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, and practical massage techniques. An ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Massage, for example, represents a substantial investment in professional training.

Degree-Level Training

Some therapists have studied massage therapy or sports therapy at degree level. While a degree is not essential, it indicates a deeper level of anatomical and physiological knowledge that can be particularly valuable for clinical and sports massage.

Professional Membership

Federation for Holistic Therapies (FHT)

The FHT is one of the UK's largest professional associations for complementary therapists. Membership requires verified qualifications, adherence to a code of conduct, and evidence of continuing professional development. FHT membership also provides clients with access to a complaints procedure — an important safeguard.

Other Professional Bodies

Other reputable professional bodies include the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the Institute for Sport and Remedial Massage (ISRM), and Sports Massage Association (SMA). Membership of any of these organisations indicates a commitment to professional standards.

Insurance

All professional massage therapists should carry professional indemnity and public liability insurance. This protects both the therapist and the client. If a therapist cannot confirm that they are insured, this is a significant red flag.

Questions to Ask

When considering a massage therapist, useful questions include:

  • What qualifications do you hold, and where did you train?
  • Are you a member of a professional association?
  • Do you carry professional insurance?
  • Do you have experience treating my specific condition?
  • Do you conduct a health consultation before treatment?

A qualified, confident therapist will be happy to answer all of these questions openly.

Red Flags

Be cautious of therapists who:

  • Cannot or will not disclose their qualifications
  • Are not members of any professional association
  • Do not conduct a health consultation before treatment
  • Guarantee specific outcomes or "cures"
  • Offer prices that seem significantly below market rate (this may indicate a lack of professional training or insurance)
