How Often Should You Get a Massage? A Therapist's Guide

By Caroline · Massage for Wellness, Smallfield, Horley, Surrey

One of the most common questions clients ask is: "How often should I come?" The honest answer is that it depends on your goals, your condition, and your budget. There is no single correct frequency — but there are evidence-based guidelines that can help you make the right decision for your situation.

For Acute Pain or Injury

If you are dealing with a specific injury or acute pain — a sports injury, a sudden onset of lower back pain, or a flare-up of an existing condition — more frequent sessions are typically recommended in the initial phase. Weekly sessions for 3–6 weeks allow the therapist to make consistent progress on the affected tissues, building on the improvements from each previous session before the muscles have time to fully revert.

For Chronic Pain or Tension

Chronic conditions — long-standing lower back pain, persistent neck and shoulder tension, fibromyalgia — typically respond best to an initial intensive phase followed by a maintenance schedule. This might look like weekly sessions for 4–6 weeks, then transitioning to fortnightly or monthly sessions once the acute symptoms have been addressed.

For Stress Management and General Wellbeing

If your primary goal is stress management and general wellbeing — rather than addressing a specific pain condition — monthly sessions are a common and effective approach. Research suggests that regular monthly massage produces cumulative benefits for the nervous system, progressively reducing baseline cortisol levels and improving the body's ability to manage stress.

For Athletes and Active People

Active individuals who train regularly benefit from massage as part of their recovery routine. The frequency depends on training volume and intensity:

  • Recreational athletes (3–4 sessions per week): Monthly massage is typically sufficient for maintenance, with additional sessions around events or during heavy training blocks.
  • Serious amateur athletes (5+ sessions per week): Fortnightly massage supports recovery and helps identify developing problems before they become injuries.

The Honest Answer

The most important factor is consistency. A single massage provides temporary relief, but the real benefits come from regular treatment over time. Caroline will always give you an honest recommendation based on your specific situation — and she will never recommend more frequent treatment than is genuinely necessary.
