Your First Massage Appointment: A Complete Guide

By Caroline · Massage for Wellness, Smallfield, Horley, Surrey

If you have never had a professional massage before, it is entirely normal to feel uncertain about what to expect. This guide covers everything you need to know — from what happens when you arrive to how to get the most from your treatment and aftercare.

Before Your Appointment

When you contact Massage for Wellness to book, Caroline will ask about the reason for your visit and any relevant health history. This helps her prepare for your session and ensures that the treatment is appropriate for your needs. If you have any medical conditions, recent injuries, or are pregnant, please mention these when booking.

You do not need to do anything special to prepare for a massage. Arrive clean and comfortable. Avoid eating a heavy meal in the hour before your session.

When You Arrive

Your session begins with a brief consultation — typically 5–10 minutes. Caroline will ask about your current complaint, any areas of pain or tension, your health history, and your treatment goals. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to communicate your preferences regarding pressure.

There are no silly questions. Caroline's role is to make you feel informed, comfortable, and confident about your treatment.

During the Treatment

You will be asked to undress to your comfort level and lie on the treatment table, which is padded and warmed. You will be covered with a sheet or towel throughout the session, with only the area being worked on exposed. Your privacy and dignity are always respected.

The pressure applied will depend on the type of treatment and your preferences. Caroline will check in with you during the session to ensure the pressure is appropriate. If at any point you feel uncomfortable — whether from the pressure, the temperature, or any other reason — please say so immediately. There is no need to endure discomfort silently.

After Your Session

It is normal to feel deeply relaxed, slightly drowsy, or even a little emotional after a massage — particularly your first one. This is a normal response to the physiological changes that have occurred.

Caroline will provide aftercare advice specific to your treatment. General guidance includes:

  • Drink water: Massage increases circulation and can mobilise metabolic waste. Staying well hydrated supports the body's natural clearance processes.
  • Rest if possible: Give your body time to integrate the treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.
  • Expect some soreness: If you have had a deep tissue or sports massage, you may experience some muscle soreness for 24–48 hours. This is normal and typically resolves quickly, followed by improved comfort and mobility.

How Often Should You Return?

This depends on your goals and the nature of your complaint. For acute conditions, weekly sessions may be appropriate initially. For maintenance and general wellbeing, monthly sessions are a common and effective approach. Caroline will advise on the most appropriate frequency for your situation at the end of your first session.
